Selling with Content

There is no one answer to what people are looking for online. When you want to sell something the best way to get the attention of customers is to offer content they are compelled to be drawn to. Who can say what that is? You, better than anyone. You know your customer. Especially if you are in an offline business where you meet them.

If you don’t understand your customer it will be difficult to sell to them. Online forums are a good place to track what is important to customers. Even if you are only selling online you can take a profile of people and find them offline. Do you sell vitamins online? then go to vitamin shops and ask questions. Find out where those people get together and go there.

People search online to find out more anout what alreaady intersts them. There is no need to try to create interest, that is too much work. Get in front of where they are looking for information about what it is you offer. Usually the best place is the search engine but you can also look at meetups, user groups, facebook and other socail media. Social media is usually not as fast and direct as being well placed in a search engine but over time can be productive.

Last but far from least is Blog. All businesses must blog. Have you ever considered how information that was mundane to you in your industry 10 years ago is completely new and a revelation to someone? They will appreciate you for showing them this and you will have a shot to draw them into your sales funnel. This may not happen right away but even a post a week is 520 posts over 10 years. You would be getting traffic from discussions you forgot about. It all builds over time.

A few of my clients have been doing what they do for 25 years. I am getting one of them to start blogging. It will be interesting to see how that develops over time. He is a good story teller and has a million things to talk about.  People who have been focused in a field much of their life are a walking revelation of information. I sometimes feel it is kind of their duty to future generations to share what they have learned. There will always be people coming along looking to learn, grow and dicsover.  Just provide for that by getting good informational content out where it can be found.
