Matt Cutts on effective techniques for building links

by warner on April 4, 2010

Some interesting points on good link building in this video by Matt Cutts. A lot of things anybody can do.  I see most of these as being link bait. Link bait sounds like a cheap trick but it really means making or adding something that people want to link to and talk about and share.  Making link bait go viral is another part of the concept but good content tied into these linking ideas will tend to have that effect.

One thing he mentioned, probably because he sees it so often, is have a site with good site structure so it can be crawled by Googlebot. While that is not exactly link building, it is important, and a much too common. It is so common I wrote a guide on building a site for SEO to give to my clients. Get a free copy (without having to get on any mailing list) just click this link.

A few highlights:

  • Controversy is overdone and does not always reflect well on your site.
  • Participating online, Social Networks, Forums, Answering questions that help others.
  • Original research.
  • Videos and Online Conferences
  • Newsletters, getting them to subscribe
  • Lists are getting “tiresome” but they work.
  • Get a blog.
  • Make a Firefox or WordPress Plugin/Addon
  • Make a How To, especially if it something you figured out.
  • Make a service like an SEO Tool or an easy to do list.
