Google Actively Promotes Bing and Yahoo

by warner on September 9, 2010

If Google gave free advertising to Bing and Yahoo it would not send them as much traffic as the "New New New!!" "Instant Search" (faster than a speeding typist, able to distract all users in a single search)

For one thing the results are different than "old slow search" but frankly, it is just ANNOYING. It is distracting to have all the partially completed words search results.

The good part about instant search is it can be turned off. To the right of the word entry box it says "Instant Search is On" and a little down arrow shoes you can open and select to turn it off.

I think it is ok as a toy, ok for its entertainment ability but when I want to find something I want to find what I want to find and not every possible convolution popping up.

Ok I will admit it might be somewhat useful for niche marketing research, MAYBE, but it could be more of a distraction. I am looking forward to the funny results some people will get and post pictures of on digg or twitter or somewhere.

I see Instant Search primarily as an advertising play, link bait, something to get people talking about how much they love it, hate it, think its stupid, think its brilliant. Beyond its novelty what purpose does it serve?

What do you think?
